THE INVISIBLE WRITER

Hey, everyone.

I have a few folks that wanted to take the "Invisible Writer" class that I taught at Seton Hill University's MFA program a few months ago. So, I am going to offer it to everyone.

THE INVISIBLE WRITER - There are things writers unintentionally do that pulls the reader completely out of the story--each time the reader is pulled from the story there is a good chance she doesn't go back, especially repeated incidents. Michael Knost covers 13 things writers do that pushes the reader away. You will be amazed at some of the things...some things I bet you're guilty of, too.

It will be Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 9:00PM EST.

Cost will be $30.00

Please help me raise money for a friend with cancer.

A friend of mine has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her name is Donna Wagenblast Munro, and she is one of the most giving humans I have ever met. She is a writer and graduate of Seton Hill University, and worked as a coordinator for the alumni’s In Your Write Mind workshop that I just recently attended as a speaker and panelist.

The whole time I was there, Donna made sure that I had everything I needed and that I was always where I needed to be. She said she was my personal minion. And I took pride that my minion was the best! No one had a better minion than I! Then, I noticed that she did this for everyone. You see, Donna is one of those people who puts everyone else before herself. She genuinely cares about people.

When I heard the news a few days ago that she had received the diagnoses of cancer, I cried. I’m not going to lie. It hurt so much to know what she is going to be going through. After two years of watching my father battle with the disease, he is now cancer free. But it takes a toll on the person and the family.

That’s why I want to do this.

Donna deserves to have the comfort and convenience of focusing her attentions on getting better. Because she will get better—she is a fighter, that girl is! However, she doesn’t need to worry about financial issues at this time. This is where you and I come in. Together (all of us) can take the financial burden out of the equation for her and her family.

Therefore, I created a fund for her at YouCaring.com so we could make donations to support her during this difficult time. I want to assure you that 100% of all donations will go directly to Donna at the end of the campaign.

Can I count on you to help? I don’t care how much you donate, but if you can afford anything, I promise it will be appreciated and needed. You can have the self-satisfaction that you were part of something great, something life changing.

I don’t care if you know Donna or not—she’s one of ours, and we take care of our own. I don’t care if someone sent you this link and you do not know me—the one who sent you the info knows that you and I and Donna have something in common…and that you have the heart of helping others.

Use the following link for more info/pictures of Donna, and to make a donation:

CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO/PHOTOS OF DONNA, AND/OR TO MAKE A DONATION

Thank you for supporting such a wonderful person!

AND PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS, FANS, AND FAMILY.

Yours,
Michael Knost

THE BIG QUESTION

Writers often corner me in the local doughnut shop, fast food restaurant, or ice cream parlor (what? I like to eat!) to ask for advice.

Most of the time I get writing craft or business questions. They're often seeking information on how to market a book, find new submission markets, or even solicit a fat man's opinion on the best ice cream flavor.

Sometimes I get serious questions--questions like, "Should I get a writing major?"

I hate that question because I end up giving advice that could inadvertently destroy lives. And my stock answer usually goes something like this: "Get your degree in something solid...something you can always fall back to if the writing thing doesn't work out."

Now, I give this reason because I feel that if I can say anything that will sway the inquirer from his or her dream, it was never really their dream to begin with.

However, after spending an extended weekend at Seton Hill University's Alumni writing workshop, I now realize that my advice could be considered mentally Neanderthal to someone with deeply-set dreams of writing a genre novel.

Seton Hill University offers an MFA program called "Writing Popular Fiction," which is ideal for the genre writer searching for truth. And, students are assigned a mentor who has tremendous experience--even published experience--in the particular genre the student is interested in.

Many writing programs teach students a bunch of crap, taught by teachers who've never been published. Students in those programs begin the writing path at the same point an uneducated writer does with similar desires.

But, Seton Hill University's MFA program is a common sense education, filled with knowledge and mentorship needed to put you on the path to success.

I can't say enough about how wonderful this program is, and how great it is to see a university focusing on writing in the literal sense.

So, go ahead and ask the question now and see what answer you get.

LEVEL ONE ONLINE WRITING COURSE

CLASS ONE: PLOT - TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2012 @ 9:00PM EST
Workshoppers will learn the foundation of plot, what elements actually make a story, and what technically is needed for a story to be a story. I will describe each element in depth, and then show how each works with the other elements in a literary orchestra.

CLASS TWO: DESCRIPTION - TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2012 @ 9:00PM EST
Workshoppers will take from this class a developed understanding of what description is, what it is not, and how we as authors can use it to move our story forward, without making the new-writer blunders.

CLASS THREE: DIALOGUE & POINT OF VIEW - TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2012 @ 9:00PM EST
Dialogue is one of the hardest elements to master in the writing craft—and new-writers almost always seem to think they have it down pat. I will give the foundational tips that will have beautiful dialogue in your characters before you know it. Also, we will cover the most overlooked writing aspect with new-writers today: Point of View.

CLASS FOUR: CREATING GREAT CHARACTERS - TUESDAY, JULY 3, 2012 @ 9:00PM EST
In this class we will learn the layering technique when it comes to building believable characters. There are particular things that will turn your cardboard character into a real, live, human being on the page. It will make the biggest difference to your reader than anything else you can do.

Cost is $120 for all four classes. Payments by PayPal, credit card, or debit card below:

My final online writing course (SIX CLASSES) - you choose four of the subjects.

Hello everyone.

I wanted to let you know that I am going to be putting together my final online writing course in two- to three weeks.

I will probably continue doing the older LEVEL classes as there are so many folks who want to take them, but as far as new courses, I don't see myself doing any more. I have become too busy and can't keep up with my writing obligations.

With that in mind, I have decided to do one last course...and you get to choose what you want me to teach in the classes. So, make your suggestions...you know where your weaknesses are...why not focus on those?

This course will include SIX classes with the last one being a Q&A session with me and a book publisher. The FIFTH class will be a live critique of a submitted story. We will go through a short story with an editor's eye so you can see what we are looking for, what we are thinking about, and view it all from our POV.

I plan to do the classes in two- to three weeks at $120.00 for all SIX classes...and, yes, this will be my last online course. That averages out to $20 per class.

Send subject suggestions to: writingwithknost@yahoo.com

Thanks to all who have taken courses in the past. I hope I have helped at least one of you get closer to your dreams.

I'd love to see everyone one last time!

Thanks again!
Michael Knost

The Inner Journey online class

I am going to offer a new online writing class next Thursday (January 19, 2012) at 9:00pm.

Here are the details:

The Inner Journey

After the Creating Character Emotions class I had some questions regarding the INNER CONFLICT or INNER JOURNEY by two students. They asked if I would do an online class on this subject.

We have all heard about the INNER CONFLICT, the INTERNAL STORY, the INNER JOURNEY. But, few writers understand the power involved. Especially when paralleled with the EXTERNAL CONFLICT, PLOT, or OUTTER JOURNEY. What is this INNER JOURNEY and how does it work? More important, how does it breathe life into the OUTTER JOURNEY?

In my opinion, this is where the rubber meets the road in fiction. It is a big part of every great story I have ever read.

Class is $30.00 and it is recorded for you to re-watch anytime you want.

Use the following link to pay via PayPal or credit/debit card:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=NCACDFL45YVAJ

I hope to see you there!

Thanks again!
Michael Knost
